Prepping Your Worksite for Summer and Winter

The winter and summer months are approaching. As a construction site manager, it is important to begin the planning process in order to prepare your worksite and protect your important capital equipment. Office trailers for rent as well as mobile storage containers are just some of the essential additions you’ll need to keep your site safe and operational, even in the harshest winter weather.

Winterizing your worksite for the coming months is key to staying on top of your job and keeping on schedule. Make sure you’re prepared for the cold temperatures and harsh conditions winter can bring and take advantage of the rental storage solutions available to enhance your construction site’s conditions.

The Importance of Prepping for Winter

One of the reasons for preparing your construction worksite for winter is to help lower costs and reduce scheduling delays. Creating safe walkways and protective covering as well as storage facilities for important construction equipment is imperative to staying on task. You rely on your equipment for a particular job. You purchase materials with the purpose of utilizing them in the building process. Make sure you have the proper storage capabilities to keep your equipment safe and your materials usable.

A public education campaign launched by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) stresses the importance of planning, equipping and training employees for winter construction safety. This effort by OSHA and NOAA recognizes the hazards presented by the conditions brought on by winter. These hazards include slippery roads and surfaces, cold weather and the strong winds that may cause damage to a work project or injury to employees.

Why Renting Mobile Storage Containers are Important

Mobile storage containers for rent provide you with a convenient solution for your worksite storage needs. A 20 or 40-foot steel container provides you with valuable space to place your heavy equipment, building materials and/or other supplies that you want to keep protected from the effects of severe winter weather. Large storage containers are designed to withstand the elements and protect your equipment and material from damage or unnecessary environmental exposure. Depending on the size of your construction project, you should plan accordingly for the rental of several containers that can be placed strategically throughout the site and provide you with storage ease and access.

Why rent mobile storage containers? As a construction project manager, your job is to bring the project to completion on time and within budget. If the time needed to build your project includes the months during winter where inclement weather will be a factor, your need for additional on-site storage will only be for that period of time. Instead of investing dollars in a permanent storage solution with a temporary need, you can maximize your budget and fulfill your winter construction storage needs all at once through the rental of mobile storage containers.

Obtaining an Office Trailer for Your Winter Construction Project

Protecting people is as equally important to the success of your construction project during winter as protecting equipment and materials. This is especially true if you need to spend time reviewing work and conducting inspections of the worksite during the winter. Providing an office trailer for the job site gives you a warm, dry facility to conduct business, store important construction drawings and documents, and allow you to maintain your timelines no matter what is happening outside. An office trailer is as essential to your worksite as the storage solutions you rent.

As winter approaches, meeting your storage needs is an important part of your construction worksite management. Mobile office trailers and large storage containers provide you with what you need to meet deadlines, stay on task and complete your construction project. You should make the affirmative decision to look into storage rental solutions for your current job site. Rental containers do more than store materials, equipment and site plans; they help you complete work even when the winter weather conditions dictate otherwise.

Make sure your construction site has what you need to stay on schedule all season long with help from the temporary storage solutions.

South Side cleanup is popular these days

Joe Justus foresaw a need for cleaning up the South Side and decided to make plans to set things right.

Justus supervised a cleanup for the area Saturday morning, relying on the muscle from a small crew of volunteers. Four dumpsters were arranged on a side parking lot of Apple Market on King Hill Avenue, with two of the containers filling up with refuse and junk by late morning.

“It’s been really good,” Justus said of the public response. “First thing this morning, we had cars wrapped around the drive and on down the street.”

About 45 vehicles came to the site just before noon.

There’s a simple reason why Justus decided to take on such an endeavor.

“South Side doesn’t get a lot of appreciation I thought it would,” he said.

Mitchell Park area resident Steve Holdenried served as inspiration for the cleanup and placed Justus in charge.

“He’s been a big help,” he said, adding South Side resident Martha Clark also provided assistance.

The six-person detail included aid from Pittman’s Property Service of St. Joseph. Trash was taken to the city landfill, while all other items were removed to St. Joseph’s recycling center. Buchanan County handled old tires that were dropped off at the site.

Sponsors were Apple Market, South Side Progressive Association, city of St. Joseph, Buchanan County Western District and the South Side Junction Farmers Market.

The range of items left by residents would fill a list of throwaways from a typical household.

“We’ve got TVs coming in,” Justus said. “We’ve got tree branches, cardboard boxes, tires and metal.”

His ambition is to join the armed services and become a military policeman.

It’s unknown whether another South Side cleanup will be held again this year. Yet Justus has already issued a request for more volunteers and dumpsters.

“It’s most likely a sure thing for next year,” he said.

Check out the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste Management Plan to learn more.

Recycling Changes: “Don’t Bag It!”

Cleveland has an extremely easy recycling process called single stream which means residents can put all accepted recyclables in one container, while some communities have to sort recyclables into different containers. In areas that have received access to the automated curbside recycling collection program, residents have a blue recycling cart to place recyclables in that is collected weekly. Residents without access to the curbside recycling program may take recyclable materials to any City of Cleveland recycling dumpster.

The City’s goal is to make the most of these recycling efforts. However, the facility that processes Cleveland’s recyclables – the material recovery facility (MRF) – has asked the City to not promote the use of plastic bags to contain recyclables. This is a change in the industry that improves the sorting and processing of recyclable materials.  According to the MRF, plastic bags contribute to high contamination rates and sorting machine failures. Therefore, residents should no longer bag recyclables.  Rather, residents should place them loose in blue recycling carts and drop-off dumpsters. To continue the ease of recycling, residents can place recyclables in a paper bag, cardboard box or smaller plastic bin inside the  home and use that to carry recyclables to a blue cart or recycling dumpster.

Glass bottles are sorted by color and sent to processing facilities that break the glass into small pieces called cullet. The cullet is then blended with silica sand, soda ash, and limestone and melted into molten glass.

Approximately half of the wood removed by us is sorted into open-top containers and taken to a wood processing facilities where it is chipped and ground up for use as mulch, construction filler, and various types of composite board. About half of our larger pieces of wood are reclaimed by NY building materials reuse groups or are repurposed by companies in the construction of crating, planking and skids.

Metals are taken to various scrap metal facilities for intermediary ferrous and non-ferrous sorting and processing before being sold to foundries for smelting. Once there, it is shredded or ground into small chips and then melted and cast into ingots. The ingots are sent on to manufacturing plants where they are rolled into sheets of aluminum and used to manufacture end products ranging from cans to castings and car bodies.

Aurora Dumpster Service

How can I do my part to recycle in the City of Aurora, CO when renting a dumpster?

The residents of Aurora utilize private companies for trash collection and recycling. Some companies do provide curbside collection for recyclables while others do not.

There are two city-owned drop off facilities for recycling which homeowners have access too and should use if their private residential hauler does not pick up recycled material. The drop off sites require separation of the materials as the city believes this produces less contamination than single-stream recycling.

The Two Recycling Drop-off Facilities

  • Central Facilities Center
  • Saddle Rock Golf Maintenance Center

For more information on other recycled goods such as drop offs for donated items, electronics, appliances, bulb and chemical recycling, please browse Recycling Opportunities in Aurora, CO. Single stream recycling is still available at the Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site (DADS).

TIP: Work with a locally owned and operated dumpster service, which is almost always the cheapest way to rent a dumpster.  Avoid the most expensive rental options:

  1. Very large, national companies like Waste Management are more expensive than smaller, local companies.  We compared Home-city dumpster rentals buddies to locally operated companies in 48 metro areas and found WM was over $100 more expensive, on average.
  2. There are a lot of brokers in the dumpster business.  Some, like Arwood Waste, are reputable. Many others are not.  Brokers are an out-of-state middleman that books the dumpster at a higher rate than the local going rate, takes a cut, and passes the order on to a local hauler for the delivery and pickup.  They aren’t local and don’t actually own any dumpsters, though some pretend as if they do.  Worse, some claim to be “A hometown supplier of dumpster rentals to only gain for their best interest in a lead referral fee” dumpster companies that have lower prices… which is almost always false.

  • A spokesperson for Waste Management Inc. has confirmed the company will be buying all assets of Benz Sanitation. “We expect the deal will close by Aug. 1,” said Southern California Communication Manager Eloisa Orozco, via telephone.

A spokesperson for Waste Management Inc. has confirmed the company will be buying all assets of Benz Sanitation. “We expect the deal will close by Aug. 1,” said Southern California Communication Manager Eloisa Orozco, via telephone.

Tehachapi-based Benz currently provides waste collection service in the unincorporated areas of Ridgecrest and surrounding areas. They had previously provided service within the city limits, but lost the contract amid legal issues.

“We believe this will be a great opportunity and we hope to provide a seamless transition,” said Orozco. “The acquisition involves 100 percent of the company’s assets, including all their services.”

Houston-based Waste Management currently only operates in Ridgecrest and California City in Kern County.

The Bakersfield Californian reported Benz told local authorities last week it plans to lay off 132 employees spread across eight locations in Tehachapi, Ridgecrest and Rosamond as of Aug. 1. Orozco told the Californian that the company plans to retain “a majority if not all of the employees” let go by Benz. She added Benz’s owners plan to retire.

Some fun facts for your Memorial Day Weekend…

You might find yourself blurting out some of this “trashy” trivia on your Memorial Day Cookout this weekend.

Did you know…
That the average American throws away almost 5 pounds of trash a DAY.
Every day in the U.S., we throw away enough garbage to fill around
63,000 garbage trucks… a DAY! At least 1/3 of that is from the snazzy packaging we discard.

Can you guess…
What is New York’s number one export? Waste paper. Who knew!

Can you guess…
What is made from recycled glass?
Hint… try bottles, fiber glass insulation, and materials used in
building roads and construction.

Did you know…
It takes on average 6 weeks for an aluminum can to be remelted and put back on those store shelves? And it saves 90-95% less energy to produce an aluminum can if it’s being recycled than it would to create new ones.
That is fairly impressive.
